Jeff and Karen Wilson decided to retire from their careers in California and to refresh their lives with a move to a new place. They wanted to move away from the hustle and stress of corporate metropolitan existence, to find a place where the people were friendly and the pace was slower. After searching all around the country, they found it in Walsenburg Colorado.
Since 2010 the Wilsons have made La Plaza Inn their home. The Inn has continuously served the Huerfano County area since its construction in 1907. Local old-timers have many stories to tell of the building through the years and Jeff and Karen are happy to live in a place with such history.
This Historic Hotel has been refurbished several times during the last century+ and the Wilsons continue to do maintenance and upgrades that enhance the experience of a La Plaza stay. Jeff has recently replaced all of the tiling in the private baths of each room and suite. He has also lent his carpentry talents by constructing a beautiful wooden bar that is the center piece of their Lobby Bar.
Karen has spent her time learning about the hospitality industry and finding creative ways to continue the Hotel’s tradition of excellent service. She oversees the everyday running of the hotel and provides the morning feast for her Bed and Breakfast guests. She is often found in the kitchen at night too, helping Chef Gordon Lucero to produce the gourmet dinner creations that can be found in the Inn’s two on-site restaurants: The Bistro and The Library Café. The Library Café also serves lunch.
The biggest pleasure that Karen has found as an innkeeper has been the chance to meet such a wide variety of people. On warm summer evenings, when she’s able to steal a few minutes away from the bustle of management, she can be found on the patio, having a glass of wine with guests. Occasionally, she gets the chance to sit down to dinner with regular patrons, introducing them to some of the new things coming out of the kitchen.
While the running of an Inn and maintaining an older building has been a lot of work, it is a labor of love for the Wilsons who invite you to come and experience the charm of La Plaza Inn.
